"I think my shadow is afraid of the dark!"

When Oliver discovers his shadow disappears as soon as the light goes out, he decides his shadow must be afraid of the dark. Along with his favorite bear, Watson, they set out to find his shadow,

This heartwarming children's book is a whimsical story of Oliver's misguided first impression about his shadow's disappearance.  Yet, it also allows the reader to explore a bit more about the fears we all face.  As Oliver decides his shadow must be fearful of the dark, he also shares his concerns about being alone.  Fortunately, Watson is right with him throughout his story.  Ultimately, he realizes, "Just because you can’t see someone doesn’t mean they’re gone."

Beautifully illustrated by Erin Richardson and written by Martin Knight-Yeager, Oliver's Shadow became a source for their creative friendship.  Each page is a heartfelt portrait of Oliver's attempt to reconnect with his shadow.  On a personal level, the author and illustrator relied on their experiences as parents who dealt with conversations of loss and separation with their children.

May this charming story remind us that everyone who touches our lives remains part of our story forever.

Martin Yeager/Author

Martin Yeager is a Colorado native, father, and grandfather. Throughout his professional career, he integrated visual narratives into his work.  Photography evolved into more digital content, with video and print production as a medium to bring marketing strategies to the forefront.

As a parent, he raised his children with the joy of reading and storytelling.  Creating Oliver's Shadow is a new chapter, an extension of his experiences, and one he is grateful to share with your family.

Today, Martin still calls Colorado home, enjoying the hiking and walking trails with his wife and a family of four-legged critters. Together, they foster lost and stray pups with a local K-9 rescue, working to find suitable families to adopt their foster dogs. Martin admits their latest pup, Watson, proves how easy it is to fail as a foster.  Like Oliver's "Watson," this four-legged version has found a way into his life and heart.

Meet the Creators

Erin Richardson/Illustrator

As a lifelong artist, Erin grew up daydreaming about how she could bring her art to the world.   She spent many hours with her nose in books, scouring the many details in all the artwork, delighting in how she could interpret what she was discovering.
She intends to inspire the child within, touch an emotional chord in those seeking inspiration, and hopefully create a doorway to which one wants to return.     Erin has received recognition from the Society of Children's Books, Writers, and Illustrators.

Today, you will likely find her in her studio, bringing a new light and energy to her profession.  When she is not drawing, you will find her testing a new recipe in the kitchen, training in the gym, hiking the Rocky Mountains or spending time with loved ones.
